will Follow the Drinking Gourd?

Lately, I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to do a quick survey for my project to find out what middle school students think Follow the Drinking Gourd means, having never heard it before. It would be interesting that, in a culture where slavery is not thought about on a daily basis, what would the words mean and would the melody 'stick'?
