To continue my thinking about the song Follow the Drinking Gourd, I wonder if the melody was chosen or made to go with the lyrics purposely. Since an escaping slave was running and could not carry maps and probably could not afford a compass, a song with directions was vital. Being able to remember the song, and having it loop endlessly in the mind probably meant the difference between successfully escaping and being caught again.
I think I'll have 'subjects' listen to the song on one day, and then let me know the following day what happened: did they remember the song during the day, did it loop in their minds all day, or did the melody pop into their heads at random time throughout the day? This kind of data may indicate the 'stickiness' of the melody.
