Combining gourds with papercutting can be a natural. Both are plant-based and readily available. Both can be inexpensive to pursue, but made into elaborate pieces of art making them the best of both worlds!

The Belly of the Ukelele
The image, or pattern, that will be on the belly of the uke will be vines and leaves. The process is slow because the burning tips slips and slides across the surface of the gourd. Background information? The surface of a gourd varies from one to another. This particular gourd has a surface so smooth (and because it is a rounded surface), the chisel tip I use on the burner does not always maintain contact. This shots of the gourd is what got done one evening when the gourder ladies were visiting my studio. The vines cover all, with the leaves to follow in other sessions.
